ANNOUNCEMENT: EAST-OF-THE-RIVER DIALOGUES

If you’re a resident of Deanwood, Hillcrest, Fairfax Village, Capitol Heights or any of the many East-of-the-River communities, please join George Washington University in collaboration with Peace Fellowship Church, Visions to Peace Project, in a series of five-week community dialogue sessions. The sessions will focus on issues of relevance to our community, and will be an opportunity to voice opinions, share stories, build relationships, reflect, connect, empathize and better understand.

When: Every Saturday from March 26 – April 23, 1:00p – 3:00p ( Lunch will be served at 12:30pm)

Where: Peace Fellowship Church, 4339 Hunt Place, NE

Travel: Three Blocks from the Minnesota Ave metro and off the U8, U2, V7 and X9 bus lines

Peace Fellowship is hosting a worship service on January 15, 2011 for area Anabaptist and Mennonite churches in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The celebration begins at 5 pm at Peace Fellowship Church, 4339 Hunt Place, NE, Washington, DC.

All are welcome to attend.

SCRIPTURE READERS NEEDED! We are on the lookout for volunteers to read scripture Sunday mornings. Scripture readers are notified ahead of time of the passage they’ll read, to allow time to familiarize with the text. Special Event – Lancaster, PA

All are invited to A Common Grace – Path to Racial Reconciliation,Wednesday, October 20, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Blossom Hill Mennonite Church in Lancaster, PA. Eastern Mennonite University’s Center for Justice and Peace-building welcomes all to join Phoebe Kilby and Betty Kilby Baldwin at the table of brotherhood and sisterhood envisioned by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in his “I Have a Dream” speech. Phoebe is descended from slave holders, Betty from the slaves that Phoebe’s family held. Their story was recently featured on CNN.com. Together they are exploring, with CJP’s Coming to the Table program, avenues for racial reconciliation. Join this frank discussion of race in the United States. Child care provided. Special Event – Essay Contest

The Washington Office of Mennonite Central Committee U.S. is inviting submissions for its 12th annual high school essay contest. This year’s grand prize is $500. Three regional winners will be awarded $100 each. Students can choose to write about Palestine

and Israel, immigration or military spending. All essays must be submitted by December 17th. The contest is open to youth of high school age who are Mennonite, Brethren in Christ or Anabaptist and to all youth who attend Mennonite high schools. Immediate family members of MCC staff or board members are not eligible for the contest. More information, including instructions about where to send completed essays, is available at washington.mcc.org/advocate/essays.

Pastor Dennis will start a new sermon series on Sept 5: Fighting the Good Fight: A Study of 1Timothy

New Member’s Classes will be held on Sept 12, 19, 26, and Oct 3 at 8:15 AM. Please speak with either Deacon Sean Mills or Pastor Dennis Edwards if you are interested. Taking the class does not obligate you to become a member, but it is a required step if you choose to join Peace Fellowship Church.

Palestine-Israel Learning Tour

Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) is offering a 10-day Palestine-Israel Learning Tour, November 5 -15. Participants will learn more about the situation in Palestine-Israel, MCC’s work there, and the work of the Palestinians and Israelis with whom MCC has partnered. The tour will: explore ancient historical sites and walk in the footsteps of Jesus; gain a better understanding of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and current realities “on the ground”; meet with Palestinian and Israeli organizations working for peace and justice; consider the role of the Church today; and return to the United States with a commitment to engage in education and advocacy regarding Israeli-Palestinian issues.
